Panda Adopter Chet Chin in the News

While in China for the Hug My Baby event in November, Chet Chin happened to run into a Malaysian reporter/photographer team at Bifengxia.  The team was following the Malaysian keepers as they work with Chinese keepers to prepare for the transfer of two pandas, Feng Yi and Fu Wa, to Malaysia in the new year.

Imagine their surprise when they learned that Chet, who is from Malaysia, was the adopted mother of Feng Yi.  When they asked for an interview, Chet obliged.

The article, printed 12 November,  under the headline “Feng Yi’s Adoptor is a Malaysian” highlights Chet’s dedication to her adopted daughter.  Chet adopted Feng Yi shortly after her birth in 2006 and has been traveling to visit her at least once a year ever since.  Never would she have imagined that her adopted daughter would one day be traveling to her – as one of two pandas who will be on loan to Malaysia for 10 years. Of course Chet plans on visiting her often.

Feng Yi is now 7 years old and is a new mother, having given birth to a son earlier this year.  Chet has adopted her “grandson” as well.
